Navigating the Chaos: Three Simple Strategies for Mental Wellness
As we approach the midpoint of 2020, it’s clear that this year has been anything but ordinary. The challenges we’re facing seem to be intensifying, and the collective energy is undeniably heavy. From social and physical isolation to concerns about health, economic instability, and social justice, it's a lot to process in a short span of time.
In these uncertain times, maintaining our mental well-being is crucial. Here are three simple strategies to help navigate through the chaos:
1. Use Social Media Mindfully
Social media can be a powerful tool for raising awareness and fostering discussions, but it can also become overwhelming and toxic. Limit your time on these platforms and seek out unbiased news sources to stay informed without getting lost in a sea of opinions. Remember, it’s okay to take breaks from social activism to recharge. As a wise saying goes, “The Parable of the Choir: A choir can sing a beautiful note impossibly long because the singers drop out to breathe as necessary and the note goes on. Social activism should be like that.”
2. Focus on Your Breathing
Anxiety and fear can cause our bodies to tense up and our breathing to become shallow. This creates a cycle of increased anxiety. To break this cycle, practice deep breathing exercises. When you notice anxiety rising, place one hand on your heart and one on your belly. Inhale for a count of four, then exhale for four. Repeat at least three times. If you’re feeling tense, focus on slow, controlled breathing to help ease the tension.
3. Connect with Nature
Taking time to be in nature, even if it’s just a walk in the park, can be incredibly healing. Nature helps us reconnect and reminds us of our place in the world. Feel the ground beneath your feet and remember that, like the natural world, you have a meaningful existence. Use this time for self-reflection: consider how you want to engage with the world and what steps you can take towards your ideal self. Growth often starts with learning and connection, so embrace this time to understand and develop yourself.
